Goldrush is a beautiful 23-year-old yellow dun mare.  She originally came to the sanctuary from an abuse case in Anson county.  At some point her tongue was cut.  Her mouth still bears the scars from her cruel treatment.  While her owner awaited trial, her temporary caretaker ignored feeding instructions and overfed the starved horse with molasses coated sweetfeed.  This may have contributed to her present metablolic issues.
HPS placed her with a nice, young couple and they enjoyed her for many years until moving to a new farm with lush pasture land.  On the new pasture, she over ate despite wearing a grazing muzzle and several times went into laminitis.  The family's vet recommended that she be removed from their pasture in order to protect her health and placed her on thyroid medication.

On our sparse pasture, she has not had any more episodes of laminitis since returning to the sanctuary in March 2007.

Goldrush has completed her rest period and is back under saddle.  She has great ground manners, will easily pick up her feet, and stands quietly while being tacked.  Because her tongue was injured at some point, she uses a hackamore when ridden. She is western-trained and neck reins. She has proven herself on short trail rides:  crosses water, pushes through brush,  steps out nicely,  Goldrush will continue her conditioning while waiting to find a new home.  She is suitable for an intermediate, medium-sized rider.
