Phoenix first came to the sanctuary when he was only about 2 or 3 years old. He had suffered much
abuse in his short life. His owner kept him tied out in a field. A roll of barb wire was left lying on the ground
and Phoenix became tangled up in it and suffered terrible wounds all over his body.
When HPS was called to take Phoenix, we found his wounds untreated and dripping with infection. A
particularly large wound ran along his spine and torn flesh protruded about 3 inches above his back.
Phoenix recovered and found a new home through HPS for the next 5 years of his life. However, this
winter his family faced hardship due to the drought and high cost of feed along with health problems within the family and
Phoenix returned to HPS.
