Shenandoah is a Selle Francais or French Warmblood which is a rare breed in the USA.  This magnificent 17 hand tall horse competed all over the country in the Grand Prix circuit.  As he became older, he changed owners many times and eventually dropped into lower circuits.  By the age of 16 years, his body was beginning to wear out.  His last owner used to tie his head down so that he would exhibit a more pleasing form while he jumped.  This unnatural carriage placed more stress on his body and he was not able to jump freely any longer.  Eventually his knees were placed under too much stress and gave out.

A young girl at his last owner's stable raised the money to buy him.  Shenandoah could finally enjoy a pleasant retirement.

Last year the young woman began having problems and was not able to visit Shenandoah where he was being boarded very often.  Her beloved horse began to decline and she was having financial and health problems.  HPS agreed to take in the old show horse who is now 28 years old.

When Shenandoah stepped off the trailer, he could barely stand.  His knees quivered and his head hung.

Shenandoah has been placed on a diet especially for starved horses and has received the best of medical care.  Digital radiographs were done on his poor broken down knees.  Dr Lisa Busco performs regular chiropractic treatment.  He is given Adequan injections and is treated daily with DMSO.

We do not expect a full recovery for this valiant horse but will do everything to make his last days comfortable.  He has given so much in his life and now it is our turn to give to him.
