Hearts, Hands, Helping Horses

The New Face of the Homeless...

There are thousands of starved, abused, abandoned, & unwanted horses in the state of NC.  Rescues such as the Horse Protection Society struggle to help humane societies and animal control with this daunting problem.

How can you be a part of the solution?

  • Volunteer your time at the HPS sanctuary
  • Make a donation
  • Give a home to a rescue horse
  • Geld your stallion and prevent the births of unwanted foals

Sanctuary Sparkles after Spring Cleaning!
Thank you to all the volunteers who came out for our annual Spring cleaning on Project Day in March!  Leaves from the magnificent oaks that decorate our sanctuary were raked and burned.  The feedroom was reorganized and scrubbed from ceilling to floor.  The feed pans were cleaned.  The shower stall mats were washed.  Wheel barrow tires were repaired.  Cherry tree saplings growing in the woods were chopped down and burned.  All this in a single morning!
Thank  you from the horses at the sanctuary!

Horse Protection Members Have a Thirst for Knowledge
HPS members who volunteer to feed the horses have been busy attending classes on general  horse care at the sanctuary this winter.  Classes in Horse Behavior & Communication, Grooming, Health & First Aid, Nutrition, and Barn & Ranch Management were offered from 2-4 pm on Sundays.
Our members learned about herd dynamics and equine communication, and how to apply this information to handle horses safely and efficiently.  They also learned about many medical issues such as colic, laminitis, founder, dsld, tendon injuries, wounds, medications, abcesses, ulcers, and eye problems.  Members also learned about the equine digestive system and nutrition: feed, forage and supplements.  The last class is on April 1st and participants will learn barn & ranch management skills.

New Rescue and Returning Placement
Shaman returns after being placed in a home for 3 years.  A newly rescued mare has an unusual medical condition.  New EPM treatment has fantastic results for HPS.  This and more in the latest edition of Over Herd.

Sponsor a Horse of Your Own
For only $20 a month you can sponsor a horse at HPS.  It costs about $200 to feed and care for a horse at the sanctuary.  Sponsors receive a newsletter every month, periodic updates on their sponsored horse, and may visit their horse any Saturday between 10am-4pm.  Become an Angel Sponsor today.  Click on the link below to print a sponsorship form and indicate the name of the horse that you would like to sponsor.  Or if you like, we can choose  a horse for you.

Riding & Training Participants Needed!
The purpose of the HPS riding & training program is to get the horses back into condition before going to new homes, to give them any additional training they may need, to help them overcome their fears of being ridden, and to learn about the horses' abilities & personalities so they can be matched with an appropriate home.

If you would like to participate, you must have a current HPS membership, volunteer 14-16 hours a month on the feed schedule or barn cleaning schedule, have good riding skills, possess a willing attitude and be prepared to make a long-term commitment to the program.  Because many of the horses are recovering from long term starvation there are some weight restrictions for riding but we also need people to help with groundwork, grooming, and tack maintenance.

Program meets on Sundays from 10am- 2pm presently, however, times will be extended when the new arena is ready.  For further details, please contact the sanctuary at hps@horseprotection.org.

Gelding Program Making a Difference
In 2009, we at HPS opened a new door to solving the problem of unwanted, abused and neglected horses in the United States.  The program, Stallion to Gelding Support (SGS), targets the gelding of stallions in breeding programs in order to reduce the number of unwanted births.  Response has been overwhelming! SGS has gelded 118 stallions from March 2009 - May 2010 thus preventing the birth of 455 offspring.  SGS success has prompted other organizations to begin their own gelding programs, and has encouraged at least one foundation to fund gelding in addition to spay-neuter services.

Please visit the Stallion to Gelding Support website to learn more about SGS by clicking on the link:

Effective October 2010, SGS began a Directed Donations option to allow owners of non-breeding stallions to have their horses gelded by participating in the fund-raising process specifically for their horse.  Go to the SGS website and click on "Gelding the Non-Breeding Stallion"  on the left-hand side of the home page.
