This story starts with a phone call to us about an owner who was going to shoot his horse, a young mare in good condition that should have a long and happy life. I agreed to call the owner and sure enough I was told that the mare would be “put in a hole in the ground before he would spend one more cent on her.”
We were told the the mare was bought at Vale horse auction about two years ago, to be the “extra horse.” She was the perfect horse, and anyone could ride her until four months ago she “turned into crazy horse.” She had become touchy on some spots on her body and would buck the owner, a 200+ pound man (plus his large western saddle) off whenever he tried to ride her.
We offered several suggestions to help the mare and cure the issues but he would not hear any of it. He had tried to sell the horse, he had tried to give the horse away to anyone who would take her but nothing had worked. The thought of someone killing this 10 year old mare was unacceptable and we agreed that HPS would take her.
We named her Red Sky, for her gorgeous sorrel coat. Given her tail set, ears, and body conformation you can’t help but think Arabian when looking at her! Red Sky joined the herd and quickly found her place with Frosty and Flame, the three are an inseparable trio! She is currently undergoing assessment in our equine training program and is proving to be a very smart girl, another clue that points to part Arabian!
If you are interested in Red Sky, please contact the sanctuary to make an appointment to meet her. Click here to learn more about placement!
